Where'd all the imagination go?

So yesterday, I was talking with my husband about different it is for children today. My 11 year old had a friend over and they decided to go to the park. So I gave them my cell phone and gave them strict instructions to call in an hour to check in. To my surprise, they came back in an hour saying that they were bored because there was nothing to do. I thought, “It’s the park, how can you get bored at the park?” But then I realized that children today want instant gratification for everything and have come to expect to be instantly entertained. When I was my daughter’s age, and I will not say exactly how long ago that was, I would go the park with friends and we made up our games of adventure and intrigue mostly following the latest cool movie or television show. But kids today don’t really have to self entertain themselves anymore. They have cable television with a billion channels, playstations, and the internet. All imagination has gone out the door and given to the people who create all this stuff that entertains us. My husband then comes up with this great idea of how we could spend more quality time together as a family. He said, “We should start riding our bikes together. “ My kids got really excited over this idea and with that they all go down stairs to the “Man Cave” to look on the computer for different bikes that they can get. Well… I figure at least they are doing this as a family, right?
